Captains Courageous” is Friday film in Calais

The St. Croix Valley Film Society will meet again Friday, Aug. 27,2010 at 6 p.m. at the Holmestead, 527 Main St. in Calais, to see “Captains Courageous”, the 1937 American classic film, which honored Spencer Tracy with an Oscar for “Best Actor” in his role as a Portuguese fisherman. The film is based on the Rudyard Kipling novel of the same title. It is the story of a snotty spoiled brat who falls overboard while traveling with his father from New York to Europe on an ocean liner. Everything changes for the boy after he is rescued from the icy Atlantic waters by a fisherman and after he understands that the captain of the fishing vessel has no intention to return to port until his schooner is full of fish. Freddie Bartholomew plays the role of the boy who learns the lesson of his life and young Mickey plays the captain’s son. Everybody is welcome. There is no admission charge.
